Toys “R” Us stores across the nation were offering refunds for vinyl bibs they sell. Toys “R” Us sells about one million of the vinyl bibs each year. Test results confirmed that some of the bibs, made in China, were contaminated with lead. Kathleen Waugh, a spokeswoman for Toys “R” Us said “Quality control slipped at the point of manufacturing. I certainly don’t know how. But it happened somewhere in the quality control process.”
Ms. Waugh said the contamination level was high enough to violate the safety standards of Toys “R” Us, but not those of the federal government. They’re assuming that the bibs aren’t a risk factor unless they are so worn out that pieces could be digested by babies. The stores will still sell bibs made from materials other than vinyl, including cotton and terry.
