After NBC’s and Apple’s dispute about the pricings of television shows on iTunes, NBC is now deepening their relationship with Amazon. Amazon claims they will offer something that Apple didn’t – more price flexibility. Amazon’s UnBox download service will now have a more diverse range of shows the day after airing including Heroes, The Office, and 30 Rock.
“Amazon is a company that understands the value we provide as content owners to its business.” Stated the president of NBC Universal Digital Distribution, Jean-Briac Perrette.
Amazon is definitely offering more flexibility. Usually, the pricing at Amazon is cheaper for older shows. However, you have the option to rent a show for $3.99 or download it for $14.99. NBC Universal is the first television and movie company that is challenging Apple’s iTunes claiming their prices are too low. NBC will not renew their contract with Apple, which would put a big dent in Apple’s pocket.
There is one problem with Amazon’s Unbox. The movies purchased from Unbox are not compatible with an ipod, one of the most popular portable video players as well as Apple’s creation. We will see how things pan out in the future!
