Blockbuster has announced on Wednesday that it will buy the popular movie download firm MovieLink. Though Blockbuster has its own movie service like Netflix, having obtained MovieLink will enable Blockbuster to compete with Netflix once again. Blockbuster’s Total Access service, which allows their customers to receive DVDs through the mail, currently has 3.6 million subscribers while Netflix has 6.7 million subscribers.
“Blockbuster, based in Dallas, said it will continue to operate Movielink as a stand-alone service and eventually make elements of the service available through Blockbuster.com.”
In 2002 Five Studios created MovieLink and it was the first time full movie downloads were made available online. Jim Keyes, the chairman and chief executive of Blockbuster said, “Our acquisition of Movielink, with its associated digital content, is the next logical step in our planned transformation of Blockbuster.” MovieLink is equally owned by 5 major movie studios - Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Warner Bros.
